Are You Drinking Plastic? The Truth About Nanoplastics in Bottled Water

In recent years, bottled water has become the go-to choice for millions seeking convenience and perceived purity. But behind the clean labels and crystal-clear liquid lies an invisible concern: nanoplastics.

What are nanoplastics?

Nanoplastics are tiny plastic particles—less than 1 micrometer in size—that originate from the degradation of larger plastic items, including bottles, caps, and packaging. Unlike microplastics (which are larger and sometimes visible under a microscope), nanoplastics are so small they can pass through cell membranes and potentially enter the bloodstream.

Where do they come from?

In bottled water, these particles often come from:

  • The bottle itself: PET (polyethylene terephthalate) degrades over time, especially with heat exposure or prolonged storage.
  • The cap: Friction during opening and resealing can shed particles into the water.
  • Manufacturing processes: Tiny fragments may enter during bottling or from contact with machinery.

What does the science say?

A 2024 study by Columbia University used a new imaging technique to reveal that a single liter of bottled water contains between 110,000 and 370,000 nanoplastic particles. That’s 10 to 100 times more than previously estimated using traditional methods.

Even though health effects are still being researched, early findings suggest nanoplastics may disrupt hormones, trigger inflammation, and accumulate in organs over time.

Is filtered tap water safer?

In many cases, yes. High-quality water filtration systems, especially those using nano-filtration membranes (0.1–0.2 microns), can remove most plastic particles effectively. And unlike bottled water, filtered water isn’t stored in degrading plastic containers.

What can you do?

  • Avoid plastic bottles, especially when stored in hot environments (like cars).
  • Use reusable stainless steel or glass bottles.
  • Consider a bottle with built-in advanced filtration—some can filter down to 0.2 microns, blocking micro- and nanoplastics.
  • Stay informed and pressure brands for transparency.
